In dit hoofdstuk wordt de klacht van de patiënt over elke gewichtstoename als uitgangspunt genomen. Er bestaat geen gangbare definitie voor gewichtstoename. Voor de klacht gewichtstoename bestaan geen objectieve criteria, het gaat om het probleem zoals de patiënt dit ervaart. Indien een mager iemand enkele kilo’s zwaarder wordt, zal dit meestal niet als klacht ervaren worden en bij een arts worden geuit. Bij personen met overgewicht is gewichtstoename meestal ongewenst en zal het als klacht worden gepresenteerd. De klacht gewichtstoename is dan ook sterk gebonden aan overgewicht.
