Luchtweginfecties in het algemeen en infecties van de bovenste luchtwegen in het bijzonder komen wereldwijd zeer veel voor en zijn de voornaamste reden om de arts te consulteren. Luchtweginfecties zijn bovendien in de nietgeïndustrialiseerde landen nog steeds de belangrijkste doodsoorzaak op de kinderleeftijd.
