Abstract

De publicatie van de DSM-III (APA, 1980) en haar opvolgers hebben een sterke stimulans gegeven aan onderzoek naar persoonlijkheidsstoornissen, met name bij mensen met (comorbide) psychiatrische aandoeningen. Daarmee is tegelijkertijd een brede en soms heftige discussie gestart over de bruikbaarheid van theorieën, de mate waarin klinische syndromen van persoonlijkheidsstoornissen zijn af te grenzen, de onderscheidbaarheid van de persoonlijkheidsstoornissen binnen de DSMclusters, de mate waarin persoonlijkheidsstoornissen stabiel aanwezig zijn en ten slotte de mate waarin persoonlijkheidsstoornissen dimensionaal kunnen worden uitgedrukt (zie o.a. Widiger & Frances, 1994).
