Excessief huilen kan voorkomen als symptoom van een onderliggende ziekte of als onderdeel van een syndroom dat wordt aangeduid als ‘darmkrampjes’, ‘navelkolieken’ of ‘infantile colic’. In beide gevallen wordt soms de term ‘huilbaby’ gebruikt, zowel door leken als door professionals. Deze casus illustreert het belang van het onderscheid tussen huilen als symptoom en huilen als onderdeel van een syndroom. Hierbij speelt een tijdcriterium een belangrijke rol: bij overmatig huilen dat korter duurt dan drie weken is de kans op een somatische oorzaak groter. Om verwarring zoveel mogelijk te voorkomen, wordt een gestructureerde aanpak van het probleem geadviseerd.
