Abstract
Ischemic stroke is a sudden onset of focal neurological deficit lasting >24 h and attributable to ischemia.
Its incidence is 240–600/100,000 people. Older age, hypertension, diabetes, lipids, cardiac diseases, smoke, and obesity are risk factors. Stroke causes about 9 % of death around the world. About a quarter of stroke patients die within a month, a third by 6 months, and a half by 1 year. Of the stroke survivors, 16 % are institutionalized, 31 % dependent on self-care, and 20 % on mobility. A particularly poor prognosis is related to the so-called malignant middle cerebral artery syndrome.
