Abstract
Although it is known that the first thoracoscopy has been performed by Jacobeous when he introduced the cystoscope to look inside the chest the Viennese physician Josef Grünfeld reports in an article published in 1879 that, according to Samuel Gordon, Dr. Francis Richard Cruise “performed an endoscopic examination of a chest fistula using a binocular device that made his instrument more perfect”. The purpose of this chapter is to give an overview of the current state of minimally invasive thoracic surgery including its modern role in diagnostic and therapeutic options.
