Abstract
Una delle prime applicazioni della statistica alla fisica è il cosiddetto “teorema del viriale”, dovuto a Clausius. Il teorema si applica a un sistema isolato (oppure soggetto a un insieme di forze avente risultante nulla) costituito da N particelle, schematizzate come punti materiali, che si muovono in una regione limitata dello spazio. Esempi tipici di sistemi di questo tipo possono essere il gas contenuto entro un recipiente, una stella, etc.
