Abstract
Cross-sectional imaging studies are an essential component in the assessment of perianal inflammatory disease, including its anatomic relationship with the anal sphincter complex, and in monitoring disease evolution following medical or surgical treatment [1]. In the 1980s and 1990s, CT was introduced to investigate the presence and extent of inflammatory changes in patients with Crohn’s disease (CD). Careful interpretation of anatomic landmarks on thick- section axial images was necessary to distinguish supra- from infralevator compartment abscesses [2, 3].
