La cute protegge il corpo umano dall’ambiente esterno garantendo all’individuo il proprio benessere psicofisico. La stessa funzione protettiva viene espletata dagli indumenti che da tempi remoti vengono usati a contatto diretto con la pelle in ogni periodo della vita; inoltre esercitano un ruolo nella regolazione della temperatura e dell’umidità cutanea. Gli indumenti, pesanti o leggeri, limitati a pochi capi in periodo estivo o stratificati in modo più o meno complesso in inverno, coprono la pelle sia dell’adulto che del bambino durante l’arco dell’intera giornata. Da ciò deriva l’importanza di un corretto modo di vestire, in particolar modo i bambini, e di una scelta oculata dei tessuti usati per confezionare gli indumenti: le fibre, naturali o sintetiche, vengono infatti prima colorate e poi trattate con prodotti ignifughi, antistatici, sbiancanti che ne garantiscono particolari caratteristiche di indeformabilità, irrestringibilità, brillantezza e caratteristiche fisiche di resistenza particolari.
