Abstract
Patients with acute heart failure represent a vast majority of those admitted to the medical intensive care unit. Heart failure can be the principal reason for ICU admission or can develop during the hospitalisation in the ICU. Congestive heart failure is a state of abnormal circulatory congestion because of inadequate cardiac performance and various compensatory mechanisms. On the other hand, noncardiac circulatory overload can be the consequence of primary increase in blood volume (excessive fluid loading, acute renal failure) or primary increased venous return (arteriovenous fistulas, cirrhosis, beriberi). Many patients with noncardiac volume overload and healthy heart can develop high-output heart failure.
