Work of breathing

Part of the book series: Topics in Anaesthesia and Critical Care ((TIACC))

Abstract

Breathing is a form of muscular exercise. The work of breathing may be assessed by two different, but complementary, approaches: a) by measuring the mechanical work done by the respiratory muscles (or by a ventilator substituting for them); b) by estimating the total energy cost of breathing by measurement of the oxygen consumption of the respiratory muscles. The ratio of mechanical work to energy cost yields mechanical efficiency.
