Abstract
Acinetobacter (A.) baumannii has emerged in recent years as an important nosocomial pathogen, both because it frequently causes severe infections [1, 2] with multidrug-resistant strains [3–8], and because it is involved in multiple epidemic outbreaks in intensive care units (ICU) [9–13] and general hospital wards [4, 10, 14, 15]. In spite of intense efforts to control and prevent colonization and infection, A. baumannii has become endemic in ICU in Spain [10, 16–18] and many other countries [2–4, 8, 9, 15, 19–21].
