Abstract
Carcinoid tumors can be defined as neoplasms of the diffuse endocrine system which are either benign or have a more favorable prognosis than carcinomas. The characteristics are: (1) typical growth pattern (trabecular or gyriform, medullary or insular, glandular, mixture of these three types, and undifferentiated); (2) silver affinity; (3) expression of neuroendocrine markers; (4) expression of gut/brain peptides and amines.
