Abstract
Explaining the American perspective on the World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists (WFSA) is a daunting but welcome challenge. There is something unique, and perhaps incomprehensible to those who live outside the United States, about the attitude of Americans to international organizations. Often Americans are perceived as isolationist, xenophobic, and loath to make international commitments. Yet, the truth is that Americans are not so easily categorized, having strong segments of the population that are simultaneously internationally minded and isolationists. The American contributions to the WFSA clearly demonstrate this dichotomy, with strong groups arguing for and against joining the organization.
