Abstract

The spectrum of white matter diseases is broad, with conditions ranging from the relatively benign to the progressively debilitating to the rapidly fulminant and fatal. While a specific diagnosis based on the imaging appearance alone is often not possible because of considerable overlap among the diseases, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) remains ideal for the detection of many of these diseases because of its sensitivity in identifying free water within the normally myelinated white matter.
