Abstract
The VIRGO project refers to the construction of a 3 km-long arms interferometric gravitational wave detector, close to Pisa (Italy). The working principle of the detector is outlined in Sect. 1. Then the nature of the gravitational waves (Sect. 2) and the amplitude of the signals expected by astrophysical sources (Sect. 3) is discussed. The design and the techniques used to increase the sensitivity of VIRGO are illustrated in Sect. 4 while the status of construction can be found in Sect. 5.
