Riassunto

Sin dai primi passi della terapia genica alla fine degli anni’ 80, la comunità scientifica e l’opinione pubblica immediatamente cominciarono a percepire le problematiche etiche e sociali connesse con questa disciplina. Da un lato le tecnologie della terapia genica sono ancora largamente sperimentali, e pongono quindi un importante problema di sicurezza. Dall’altro lato, molte delle applicazioni della terapia genica hanno come obiettivo specifico quello di modificare stabilmente le caratteristiche genetiche di un individuo, stimolando quindi il dibattito se sia lecito o meno perseguire queste modifiche sul feto prima della nascita o direttamente sull’embrione. Infine, mentre l’utilizzo della terapia genica appare largamente condivisibile quando lo scopo sia quello di consentire la sopravvivenza o di migliorare le condizioni di salute di un individuo, appare oggi evidente che le medesime tecnologie possono anche essere utilizzate per il miglioramento cosmetico o delle prestazioni individuali, ad esempio quelle sportive.
