Riassunto

L’incidenza annual e dei carcinomi squamosi del cavo orale è pari a circa 300.000 nuovi casi l’anno con i maggiori picchi nei paesi poco industrializzati, in relazione a particolari abitudini di vita; il paese più colpito in assoluto è l’India, dove le neoplasie orali costituiscono circa il 40% di tutti i tumori maligni. In Italia l’incidenza è pari a 0,4 casi per 100.000 abitanti. Il rapporto tra maschi e femmine, in passato pari a 8–10:1, è attualmente pari a 2–3:1 in seguito alla maggiore abitudine al tabagismo e al consumo di alcol nelle donne, ma anche alla sempre più frequente comparsa di queste neoplasie in giovani donne anche in assenza dei più comuni fattori di rischio [1].
