Riassunto
I disturbi di personalità sono modelli stabili, inflessibili e pervasivi di esperienza interiore e comportamento esterno che determinano un disagio ed una compromissione del livello complessivo di funzionamento e sono in contrasto con le aspettative della cultura della persona (American Psychiatric Association, 2000). Sebbene i disturbi di personalità siano genericamente associati a prudenti o cattive prognosi, raggrupparli in un singolo costrutto globale è clinicamente inappropriato. È più accurato ed efficace concepire i disturbi di personalità come una categoria eterogenea, caratterizzata da sintomi e comportamenti che rappresentano un continuum all’interno di ciascuna diagnosi. Esiste molta variabilità individuale nella gravità e nella pervasività dei sintomi. Molti individui con disturbi di personalità vivono vite relativamente equilibrate. Quelli con disturbi più gravi, quelli con disturbi mentali, fisici e da abuso di sostanze in comorbilità, quelli le cui vite siano state caratterizzate da periodi di significativo stress interno o esterno tendono a manifestare sintomi più gravi e livelli di funzionamento più bassi.
