Riassunto
Il tessuto osseo è una forma specializzata di tessuto connettivo, nel quale la mineralizzazione della matrice extracellulare conferisce al tessuto una notevole durezza e resistenza. Esso assolve tre compiti principali:

funzione meccanica, di sostegno e come sede di inserimento della muscolatura;
-
funzione protettiva per i principali organi e per il midollo osseo;
-
funzione metabolica, quale riserva di calcio e fosfati, con un ruolo centrale nell’omeostasi del calcio nei liquidi corporei.
