Prevention and Treatment of Lead Extraction Complications

Abstract

Lead extraction, performed with the previously described tools and techniques, is not yet free from severe risks of injuries and death. Possible complications of this procedure can be defined by the time of their onset from the moment of intervention and by their grade of severity [1], [2]. Essentially, complications can be described as:

  1. 1.

Intraprocedural: any event related to the performance of a procedure that occurs or becomes evident from the time the patient enters the operating room until the time the patient leaves the operating room. This includes complications related to patient preparation, anesthesia delivery, opening and closing, and throughout the intervening time period.

  2. 2.

Post procedural: any event related to the procedure that occurs or becomes evident within the 30-day period following the procedure.
