Riassunto

Le materie plastiche sono sostanze organiche completamente o parzialmente sintetiche. I loro componenti principali sono composti ad alto peso molecolare (polimeri), le cui molecole sono costituite da un grande numero di unità fondamentali (monomeri), unite da legami chimici diversi ma per lo più di natura covalente. Strutturalmente esse comprendono catene lineari, anche molto aggrovigliate tra loro, o reticoli tridimensionali; sono composte prevalentemente da atomi di carbonio e di idrogeno e, in alcuni casi, di ossigeno, azoto, cloro, silicio o zolfo. Solide allo stato finito, possono essere modellate allo stato fluido almeno una volta. Nel loro insieme costituiscono una famiglia molto numerosa, di centinaia e centinaia di sostanze diverse, sebbene il settore del packaging ne impieghi un numero assai limitato.
