Riassunto

La malattia aterosclerotica può essere considerata un’infiammazione cronica derivante dall’interazione tra lipoproteine modificate, monociti-macrofagi, linfociti T e i normali costituenti della parete arteriosa. L’accumulo di lipidi nell’intima delle arterie e la proliferazione di particolari tipi di cellule, tra cui macrofagi, cellule muscolari lisce e fibroblasti, avviano la formazione della placca ateromasica. L’accrescimento della placca, che si sviluppa in maniera lenta e subdola, tende a restringere il lume del vaso, causando una stenosi. La placca può andare incontro ad altre complicazioni, tra le quali l’evenienza più grave è rappresentata dalla rottura, con deposito di un coagulo ematico che, nel giro di pochi minuti, conduce alla chiusura completa dell’arteria.
