Abstract
Ankle arthrodesis should be considered for treatment for painful end-stage arthropathy of the talocrural joint. This is generally the result of progressive collapse of the dome of the talus with secondary degenerative change in the joint. The condition is usually associated with extensive osteophytes, both anteriorly and posteriorly, which in combination with the talar collapse, result in painful restriction of ankle movement [1, 2]. The sub-talar joint may be involved to a variable extent but mild-to-moderate sub-talar degenerative disease does not preclude ankle arthrodesis (Fig. 30.1).
