Fui iniziata alla prospettiva del mondo di Coxeter in occasione di un viaggio accademico, durante il quale partecipammo alla cerimonia di benvenuto per le nuove reclute della Royal Society of Canada. In attesa dell’inizio delle formalità, Coxeter e io ci trovavamo nella biblioteca della villa di proprietà del presidente dell’Università di Toronto. Con una mano, Coxeter reggeva un bicchiere di vino rosso pericolosamente inclinato, e con l’altra un pasticcino con un ripieno forse troppo ricco. “Questa pasta alla crema è un po’ fuori luogo”, osservò, come sempre vestito con minuziosità in giacca e cravatta. Tra un saluto dei suoi ammiratori e un augurio dei colleghi, Coxeter alzò il braccio per indicare qualcosa lì vicino e mi chiese: “Di che forma è quel tavolo?”. Già m’immaginavo fosse una domanda a trabocchetto. Ma io dissi quello che vedevo. Era un cerchio. Mi corresse: “Se fossi appeso al soffitto, guardando dall’alto, allora sarebbe un cerchio”. Ma dalle coordinate della nostra posizione nella stanza, la prospettiva era deviata e trasformata. Egli vedeva il tavolo come un’ellisse e aggiunse, come nota a margine, che aveva addirittura scritto un saggio sull’argomento, intitolato poeticamente In qual caso un cerchio può apparir come un’ellisse?
