Abstract

Different studies have suggested that the prevalence of gallstones is increased in patients with cirrhosis [13]. In the past, open cholecystectomy (OC) in cirrhotic patients was commonly accompanied by significant morbidity and mortality [4, 5]. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) has become the procedure of choice to treat symptomatic cholelithiasis in the general population. However, cirrhosis has been considered as a contraindication for LC due to the risk of bleeding and liver failure [6]. Currently, with the advances in laparoscopic technology, a range of increasingly complex procedures are performed, making traditional contraindications at best relative. Several studies have reported good results and suggested liberal use of LC in patients with early-stage cirrhosis and symptomatic cholelithiasis.
