Le gemme sono apicali se si trovano all’apice del fusto, ascellari se sono all’ascella delle foglie (Fig. 18.2). Le prime (quelle apicali), dette anche principali, provvedono alPaccrescimento della pianta, le seconde (ascellari), dette anche secondarie, prowedono alla ramificazione della pianta.
