La broncoscopia nasce come procedura invasiva con finalità terapeutica alla fine del XIX secolo. Alcune procedure, quali le broncoaspirazioni e l’estrazione di corpi estranei hanno fatto parte del bagaglio dei broncologi per tutto il secolo scorso. L’awento della strumentazione laser agli inizi degli anni ’80, la disponibilità di elettrocoagulatori certamente sottoutilizzati in endoscopia respiratoria e la commercializzazione delle prime protesi endobronchiali negli anni ’90, insieme alla mai dimenticata confidenza, soprattutto europea, con la strumentazione rigida hanno consentito di rilanciare le metodiche di terapia endoscopica presso i maggiori centri di broncologia in Italia ed in Europa. L’indicazione prevalente è divenuta la patologia neoplastica ostruttiva con terapie palliative, con la finalità di migliorare la sintomatologia secondaria alla ostruzione delle vie aeree prossimali e di evitare la morte per insufficienza respiratoria.
