La relazione tra stress psicologico e malattia cardiaca è stata ampiamente documentata. C’è una sempre maggiore evidenza che lo stress incide praticamente su quasi tutti gli stadi del processo patologico — genesi, avanzamento e ristabilimento. Inoltre, i pazienti cardiopatici presentano spesso un considerevole disagio emozionale, in termini di rabbia, ansia, paura e depressione. Per queste ragioni, in anni recenti, la comunità medica ha sempre più riconosciuto il bisogno di interventi efficaci per la riduzione dello stress in modo da migliorare la salute emotiva e la riabilitazione fisiologica nei pazienti con cardiopatia e per facilitare la prevenzione della malattia in soggetti a rischio.
