Diversi termini vengono comunemente utilizzati, a seconda delle situazioni cliniche, per indicare un’alterazione acuta delle funzioni cognitive e del livello di vigilanza: stato confusionale acuto, agitazione, deficit cognitivo acuto o, termine derivato dall’uso anglosassone, “delirium”. Lo stato confusionale acuto o delirium è la forma più frequente di alterazione del livello di coscienza che può precedere stati più gravi, come lo stupor e il coma, a seconda della reversibilità e della gravità della causa efficiente.
