Abstract

Treatments for various degenerative disorders rely on several treatment modalities like drugs through allopathy, homeopathy and ayurveda and surgical interventions that modify the system (Fig. 3.1). There are limitations and hindrance in these therapeutic approaches when it comes to regeneration of damaged tissues and cells. To overcome these obstacles, there emerged cell-based therapies, especially stem cells (Fig. 3.1). Regenerative medicine is a multidisciplinary field of research that is rapidly expanding with the technological advancements in recent years. It involves the use of stem cells, sometimes with the combination of stem cells and tissue engineering using growth factors and biomaterials that helps to cure the diseases by performing several functions of reparative, replacive, regenerative, or rejuvenative techniques to restore damaged, aging, or diseased cells, tissues, and organs. Detailed study on adult stem cells in the past decade has kindled useful knowledge about developmental, morphological, and physiological processes that form the basis of tissue and organ formation, maintenance, repair, and regeneration. Accordingly, general clinical, scientific, and public attention to the application of stem cell therapy has been substantial (Fig. 3.1). The correlation of stem cell technology with tissue repair still has a long way to go. Conceptually and from a practical standpoint, bone marrow has been the most influential source of stem cells that offers a possibility of being used in a wide range of therapeutics. This is due to the first successful transplantation of bone marrow-derived hematopoietic stem cells dates back to the late 1960s. It is known to possess heterogeneous stem cells that participate in all steps of tissue regeneration. Despite its colossal potential and benefits in certain diseases, stem cells derived from bone marrow have not been promising to attempt curative therapeutics for all diseases. Clinical situations frequently demand stem cells with dependable quality and quantity to treat disorders of cellular degeneration.
