Abstract

Anxiety can be understood as an inherent response to any harmful situation and helps in inhibiting excessive risk-taking. In children and adolescents, some anxiety is normal and considered to be a part of developmental repertoire. However, when symptoms are excessive and start causing dysfunction, it shows that intervention is required. Since adolescence is a phase of transition and fundamental in personality development, early identification of anxiety symptoms and intervention is imperative. This chapter elucidates assessment strategies to identify anxiety symptoms and the associated thoughts and behaviors. Further, the chapter highlights the role of cognitive behavior therapy as the most efficacious treatment for anxiety symptoms in adolescents and brings forth the treatment elements, that is, psycho-education, affect recognition, cognitive restructuring, relaxation and exposure, assertiveness, social skill training and problem-solving strategies, involvement of parents, and effective termination. Last but not the least, the chapter tries to delineate certain barriers that the therapist may face in treatment and ways of dealing with the same.
