Abstract
The Recogen, coconut shell to charcoal project in Badalgama, in Sri Lanka’s northwestern province, involved the construction of a mechanized charcoaling plant for converting abundantly available coconut shell to charcoal using gasification cum pyrolysis—the thermo-chemical decomposition of organic material at high temperatures in an oxygen-deprived environment—and subsequently using the energy of the released gases and steam to generate electricity.
… Haycarb and Recogen have shown us what local engineering skills and ingenuity can accomplish on their own. It’s surely something that Sri Lanka can crow about, something which should make us want to stand up and cheer!
