Summary
In the clinical field of autism, puberty or adolescence is a critical period. The psychosexual development of autistic children during adolescence was investigated, especially from the viewpoint of establishing gender identity formation. Some problems are proposed: the difficulty of establishing gender role identity during preadolescence, control of the growing sexual drive, perverse behavior, obsessiveness about body image, and the difficulty of establishing a relationship with a sexual partner. Psychosexual development is thought to be facilitated through the influence of interpersonal relationships. Hence it is a difficult task for autistic children to establish gender identity.
