It has been commonly assumed that the retina has reached a nearly fully functional state by the time of eye opening. Further postnatal maturational refinement of visual function is thought to take place in higher visual areas. Moreover, the well-documented sensitivity of the visual system to visual deprivation is thought to involve exclusively reorganization of synaptic connectivity in the higher visual centers.
