Summary
This article describes a method for designing our custom cementless stem (Expert 2). The three-dimensional shape of the femoral canal is described by using CT data of a femoral axial scan. Our computer program decides the shape of an optimal-fit custom stem that can be inserted into the femoral canal. We have performed total hip replacements using this custom stem since 1997. Eighty-seven of the hips have reached 1 year or more after operation. The mean JOA score has been improved from 42 points preoperatively to 88 points the time of last follow-up. Short- term clinical results are considered to be successful.
