Abstract
The transport processes that occur within the arterial wall influence wall biology and the development of arterial disease.Such processes are influenced by the properties of the individual layers of the wall and by interactions between them. Atherosclerosis is characterized by the accumulation of material in the intima, a process which could result from hindrance to transport across the media. The transport properties of the media are influenced by those of the endothelium, local blood flow, transmural pressure and vasoactive agents. The susceptibility of different vessels to atherosclerosis may depend in part on their medial properties.
