Morphological Changes in the Flow Loaded Canine Carotid Artery

Abstract

Morphological changes in the flow loaded canine carotid artery were studied using arterio-venous shunts. First (1 to 3 days) endothelial cells swelled. Then (7 days) they were activated with increased cytoplasmic microfilaments and thickening of the basement membrane. After 2 to 4 weeks, they proliferated with splitting and multiplication of the internal elastic lamina. In 6 to 12 months, reconstruction of the arterial wall was complete with an increase of medial elastic fibers and medial laminae. This sequence of changes in flow loaded artery may be important in considering the role of blood flow in atherogenesis.
