Abstract
A major biological component of cancer is that of uncontrolled growth. Viable cells do not maintain stasis with the organ of origin although they may retain some of its specialized metabolic functions. This seemingly unlimited growth potential in vivo should be transplantable to in vitro conditions where repeatable and comparative studies could be carried out on many different cell lines, originating from tumors of the same histological type but from different individuals. However, the establishment of human tumors as permanent cell lines in vitro is a rare event.
