Combined Resection

  • Chapter
Gastric Cancer

Abstract

The stomach is located adjacent to the pancreas, spleen, transverse colon and its mesenterium, and the diaphragm, and it is also connected directly with the esophagus and duodenum. Consequently, as gastric cancer progressively invades these organs. Metastasis of cancer into lymph nodes is often noted around or along the neighboring tissues or main blood vessels. (Fig. 1) [1]. Patients with such metastases in earlier times would not have had radical operations at all. As progress in surgical and anesthesiological techniques has, however, been made in recent years, radical operations to perform combined resection of gastric cancer and the neighboring organs can be safely conducted. The progress made in recent years in the control of respiration and parenteral nutrition has also contributed to the improvement of safety in these operations.
