Abstract

Glycerol, which is a low molecular weight (92 g/mol) alcohol, may enter the brain at a very slow rate; therefore, its administration will raise blood osmolality and create an osmotic gradient between plasma and brain with resultant net removal of water from brain. Indeed, previous studies showed that it appears to be an effective cerebral dehydrating agent [1–5].
