Contrast-Dye Method in Endoscopic Examination

  • Chapter
Gastric Anisakiasis in Japan

Abstract

Namiki et al. [1] reported a case of acute gastric anisakiasis, in which so-called food poisoning symptoms appeared several hours after eating raw fish. Endoscopic examination revealed an Anisakis-like larva penetrating the gastric wall. Since then, many similar cases have been reported. Where the Anisakis larvae could be removed by biopsy forceps upon endoscopie examination, the symptoms subsequently disappeared. On the other hand, there are several cases [2] in which patients manifest the symptoms typical of acute gastric anisakiasis but lack evidence of an Anisakis larva upon endoscopie examination. In these cases, the contrast-dye method is very useful in demonstrating the larva to establish the diagnosis.
