Interventional Neuroradiology: Present and Future

  • Conference paper
Cerebrospinal Vascular Diseases

Summary

Recent advances in interventional neuroradiology are remarkable because of the development of various microcatheters, guidewires, embolic agents, high-resolution imaging tools, and therapeutic techniques. Currently, interventional neuroradiological techniques play important roles in the treatment of various neurosurgical diseases such as cerebral aneurysms, brain and spinal arteriovenous malformations and fistulas, and cerebrovascular occlusive diseases. The author presents the current state of the art in interventional neuroradiology in each disease and shows future prospects as related to the experiences at the Department of Neurosurgery, Kyoto University. Rapid progress in interventional neuroradiology has opened new therapeutic windows in these difficult diseases. However, many problems have emerged and need to be solved, such as long-term therapeutic efficacy or risk-benefit evaluation in relation to other strategies, particularly microsurgery. The author believes that steady and objective evaluation is indispensable for interventional neuroradiology to be established as a mature and reliable therapeutic specialty.
