Abstract
In the present study, we reviewed the recent advances in diagnosis and surgical treatment of pancreatic cancer in Japan. During the period from 1981 to 1990, 11317 patients were collected and analysed at registration commitee of pancreatic cancer in Japan Pancreas Society(JPA). 3743patients(33%) were resected. There were 435 patients(3.8%) with T1 tumors less than 2cm in size and the diagnosis of StageI tumors was made in 274(2.4%)patients. Thirty eight percent of T1 tumors and 38% of StageI tumors were detected by US. Three year survival and 5-year survival according to JPS staging were 64% and 46% in StageI, 35% and 28% in StageII, 24% and 20% in StagcIII,and 12% and 8% in StageIV respectively.
