Abstract

Barrett’s esophagus is defined as a lesion in which the squamous epithelium of the lower esophagus is replaced extensively by columnar epithelium [1–3]. Three different kinds of columnar mucosa are observed in Barrett’s esophagus: Atrophic gastric fundic mucosa, junctional mucosa similar to the gastric cardia, and an intestinal type bearing “specialized columnar epithelium” (SCE) [4, 5].
