Abstract
The Surgical treatment of ruptured lumbar intervertebral disk with or without lumbar instability, or association of lumbar instability without prolapsed lumbar intervertebral disk is controversial in terms of the necessity of spinal fusion. Even today with more accurate diagnostic methods it has not been possible to lay down specific criteria for lumbar stabilization. The subject has been further shrouded in controversy because many patients remain asymptomatic for long periods just with excision of the prolapsed lumbar intervertebral disk. It has not been possible to differentiate rigid criteria for patients requiring fusion and those who do not need it.
