Comparison of MRI and X-ray CT Scan Findings in Patients with Serious Neurological Deficits Due to Head Injury

  • Chapter
Recent Advances in Neurotraumatology

Summary

Thirty-six closed-head injury (CHI) patients who showed serious neurological deficits without causative X-ray CT findings were examined by MRI(1.5 tesla).

Intracranial hemorrhagic lesions such as epidural hematoma(EDH), subdural hematoma(SDH) and traumatic subarachnoid hemorrhage(SAH) were more easily and precisely visualized by X-ray CT scan in comparison to MRI. In contrast, MRI was superior to X-ray CT scan in detecting deep brain lesions extending from the brainstem to subcortical white matter, which were characteristics in diffuse axonal injury (DAI). The clinical outcome of 20 DAI patients was closely related to clinical grading of the patient, and seemed to be relevant to the degree of extension of lesions.
