Abstract
The applicability of the superconducting magnetic energy storage in Japan is reviewed mainly on the basis of the study carried out in ISTEC. Three types of SMES, the small, medium and large scale, are defined for the study. For each of them, the requirements for the technological developments and their difficulties are evaluated. The benefits obtained by their introduction are compared with alternative equipments existed. The planning of its development is discussed for the practical application in the electric power system.
