Abstract
Principal tasks in the development of a reliable HTS magnet technology are the control or elimination of weak links, the increase of the flux pinning strength so that high critical current density is possible without significant flux creep and the engineering of these attributes into an appropriate conductor form. These developments require microstructural understanding and control at both the nanometer and the much larger, macrostructural scale. The state of knowledge of HTS macro- and micro-structures is discussed, partly from the perspective of Nb-Ti, since its optimization offers useful lessons for HTS conductor development.
