Abstract

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most common malignancies worldwide. The incidence of HCC is particularly high in Africa [1, 2] and Asia [3-6]. There is apparently strong epidemiological evidence for an important role of hepatitis B virus (HBV) in the pathogenesis of HCC. However, the precise mechanism by which HBV infection might lead to malignant transformation of hepatocytes is still far from clear.
